Leaves fall. Rain comes. Snow follows. Give the water somewhere to go.
Before freezing weather arrives in Salt Lake County, clearing leaves and debris from your gutters and downspouts helps rain and melting snow drain away from your home.
Look for leaves sticking out of the gutters, water spilling over the edges during rain, little or no flow from a downspout, or puddles below the roofline. Sagging sections or water running behind the gutter may also indicate repairs are needed.
A fall gutter cleaning helps restore drainage before wet debris freezes in place. Downspouts and discharge areas matter too: water needs a clear path away from your foundation and walking surfaces. Damaged or poorly pitched gutters may also need repair.
Clean gutters do not guarantee prevention of roof ice dams. Ice dams can develop even with clear gutters and may require attention to attic insulation, air sealing, and ventilation.
